Attending the 80th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of the Bulge in Washington, D.C. each year has been both an honor and a deeply moving experience. Surrounded by veterans, historians, and families dedicated to preserving this history, I am always reminded once again of the importance of keeping these stories alive. From insightful presentations on the battle’s history to heartfelt personal accounts, every moment reinforces the courage and sacrifices of those who fought. Highlights include hearing 100-year-old veteran Joe Landry reflect on his service, witnessing a touching tribute that earned a standing ovation, and viewing artifacts that provide a tangible connection to the past. The presence of members of Congress, ambassadors, and military leaders further highlight the significance of remembering these men and their sacrifices.
The commemoration continues with wreath-laying ceremonies at the Battle of the Bulge Monument and the Tomb of the Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery. Watching veterans Joe Landry and Ben Berry, joined by congressional representatives, participate in this solemn tribute is incredibly moving. The day concludes with a special luncheon at the Belgian or Luxembourg Ambassador’s residence (alternates each year), where veterans are honored for their service. Being part of this gathering strengthens my commitment to preserving these stories and ensuring the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation are never forgotten.
